One of the most common questions a college student will be asked is: “What’s your major?” For some students, this is an easy answer. For Undecided students, it can be a stressful one. If you are an Undecided student, you might feel like you will never figure out what you want to major in. This is where career assessments can be helpful. StrengthsQuest and SOKANU are great online career assessments to help guide you when deciding a major.
StrengthsQuest is an online assessment that asks you a series of questions to find out what your natural talents are. It then gives you a report on your top talents and a detailed description based on how those apply to you as a person. The point of this assessment is to see how you can make these traits also your personal strengths. You then can use those strengths to figure out what areas of study you would be successful in. For example, say you take StrengthsQuest and you get “Developer” as a top trait. According to StrengthsQuest, Developers see everyone as a work in progress. When interacting with others, your goal is to help them experience success. Applying this idea to possible college majors, you could consider physical therapy or education. Both majors involve helping other people gain success.
Sokanu is another career assessment different from StrengthsQuest. It’s a 20-minute survey that uses questions to measure you against 100 personality traits and then tries accurately match you to over 700 different careers. Unlike StrengthsQuest, Sokanu takes into account the factors of the career environment that you want. It asks you about desired salary, work environment, geographical location, and more. An interesting aspect of Sokanu is that it also asks about the stuff you don’t like to be able to throw out options that you absolutely wouldn’t be interested in. Once you complete the assessment, it gives you a long list of different careers. From there you can research the careers that appeal to you the most and meet with an advisor to see what major and classes would help you achieve that career.
Being Undecided is nothing to stress over. Use this time to get to know yourself and what you’re good at. There’s a major out there for everyone!
